A host who has never run the event is guessing what the producer is worrying about. Rhys Morris, event host, MC and compere.

A host who has never run the event is guessing what the producer is worrying about.

Before I fronted a stage I ran the ones behind it. Cyber-security summits in twelve cities, from London and Paris to Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Head of Events at The Office Group, where I created and hosted TOG Talks. Fifteen years of load-ins, running orders and radio calls at six in the morning.

What that looks like from the stage

When the production manager gives me a look from the back of the room, I know what it means. When the autocue dies, I know how long the operator needs. When the client's chief executive is late for their own opening, I know which two minutes of content can go.

It means I can help fix a problem from the stage rather than just fill the gap while someone else fixes it. For a corporate MC that is the difference between a host who is part of the delivery team and one who is a guest at it.

Ask your host what they did before

  • Have they run a production, or only appeared in one?
  • Do they understand a call sheet, a tech run and a show-caller's cues?
  • Can they brief a stage manager, not just take a brief from one?

The answer tells you a lot about how your event will feel when something goes wrong, which it will.

In one line

Questions people ask

Why does production experience matter in an event host?

A host who has run events understands what the producer, stage manager and client are managing behind the scenes, so they can help solve problems from the stage instead of just covering for them.
