What a good panel moderator actually does

A moderator’s job starts long before the panel. Rhys reads up on each panellist, speaks to them or their team, and agrees the two or three questions the session genuinely needs to answer. On stage he opens with a framing the audience can follow, gives each voice its share, cuts across politely when a point is running long, and steers the conversation towards something useful rather than four separate speeches.

He runs audience Q&A with structure, turns a rambling question into a sharp one, and closes with a summary that gives the session a shape. The panellists feel looked after and the audience feels the time was well spent.

Experience on both sides of the table

For twelve seasons Rhys led live conversations with international players at the WRU Official Members Club in Cardiff, including panel formats with several guests at once. He has hosted a panel for the WRU Hub Programme and in 2026 sat on the panel at the London Christmas Party Show, so he knows what a panellist needs from the chair. As the founder of the event operations platform TRM Flex he also moderates industry conversations with the fluency of someone who runs a business in the room’s world.

How Rhys prepares

He agrees the goal of the session with you, researches every panellist, drafts a flexible question plan and shares it in advance so nobody is ambushed. He briefs the panellists on the format before they walk on, works with your producer on timings, and stays in contact with the stage manager so the session lands on time even when a panellist is on a roll.
